Climate Deniers Are Getting More Air Time Than Climate Science

PETITION TO CNN: Stop advertising for fossil fuels and report on climate change!

Call on CNN to report the NEWS, not promote climate deniers!

A recent report found that CNN spent more air time on fossil fuel ads than they spent reporting on climate change.1 This is an outrage: news networks should not be promoting climate deniers when we're in a climate crisis. Climate change is getting worse — 2015 was the hottest year on record, and February 2016 was the hottest month. Drought, flooding and super storms are becoming more frequent and more extreme. This should be top-line news. But instead of reporting on this crisis, CNN is advertising for the very industry that's responsible. Tell CNN to end its climate silence! In the weeks following the announcement that 2015 was the hottest year, and that February 2016 was the hottest month on record, CNN showed five times more fossil fuel ads than news reports on climate change. The American Petroleum Institute — a climate change denying lobby group — aired 23.5 minutes of ads, versus just 5 minutes of news reports on climate change. A news network should give us the facts, not act as a voice for an industry that denounces climate science. In the past, CNN has chosen not to give advertising time to certain companies because of the potential consequences of their message. Advertising for climate change deniers while people are suffering the consequences of this crisis is not okay. When people look to you as a source for information, it's your responsibility to promote the truth. In order to build enough support we're partnering with a group of organizations calling on CNN to stop advertising for the American Petroleum Institute and to report on climate change. It's going to take tens of thousands of petition signatures to get the attention of a major news network, so we're joining forces to spread the word. Add your name to the petition to get CNN to stop promoting fossil fuels! Thanks for taking action, Caitlin Seeley George Online Campaign Organizer Food & Water Watch cseeleygeorge(at)fwwatch(dot)org
